Where Do I Begin
So, you‘ve recently been diagnosed with diabetes. You‘ve probably already spoken with your doctor and have been given a great deal of information about this disease; however, you may still feel overwhelmed and maybe aren't sure where to begin.
We‘d like to help you move from “fear” to “freedom” by providing you with some general information on diabetes and a basic idea of what you can expect in the future as you manage your diabetes.
Diabetes is a disorder of metabolism in which people have problems converting food to energy. Insulin is a hormone produced in the pancreas. Insulin is needed to unlock the cells of the body, allowing glucose to enter and fuel them. In patients with Type 2 diabetes, the body doesn‘t make enough insulin or isn't able to effectively use insulin. Despite high levels of glucose circulating in the blood, the cells of the body are starved for energy.
Diabetes, and other illnesses associated with this disease, can be managed through a few simple lifestyle changes, a diabetes care plan, and adherence to a routine. Despite the severity of the disease, diabetes care can be managed if you have the right tools.
One valuable resource available for people with diabetes is Rite Aid‘s “Diabetes Health Organizer.” The health organizer can help you document information concerning your lifestyle changes, physician information, medications, and exercise and nutrition routines. The goal is to help create healthy habits you can stick to.
