Glucose Goals

Also known as blood sugar, blood glucose is the main sugar found in the blood and the body's main source of energy. Blood glucose measurements help to determine how well your body is using the sugar you eat, assisting in diabetes diagnosis and management.


Listed below are some general blood glucose goals to guide you:

Blood Glucose Normal Goal
Before meals Less than 110mg/dL 80-120mg/dL
2-hrs after meals Less than 140mg/dL Less than 180mg/dL
Bedtime Less than 120mg/dL 100-140mg/dL

Results must be confirmed by repeat testing on a different day.

If you discover that your blood glucose levels are above these normal ranges and you haven't been diagnosed with diabetes or pre-diabetes, then tell your doctor. Your physician may wish to recheck your blood glucose levels to determine your risk for diabetes or recommend healthy lifestyle changes focused on nutrition and exercise.

If you have diabetes, these goals are important. Keeping your blood glucose levels close to the normal range will help you feel better and prevent the long-term complications of diabetes. Self monitoring of blood glucose is the best way to know if you are reaching the recommended glucose goals.

Although the American Diabetes Association recommends these goals for most patients with diabetes, these goals are not for everyone. Sometimes children and older adults with diabetes have higher goals to avoid the risk for hypoglycemia. Pregnant women may have lower goals, as good control is very important during this time. Your health care team can provide you with the blood glucose goals that are best for you.
